Issue: HIV/AIDS Resources and Awareness
Researchers at Emory University’s Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), in a project funded by the M•A•C AIDS Fund, wanted to design and launch a nationwide database directory of HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) providers in the United States.
SIGNAL designed and programmed an online directory where site visitors can instantly find their local PrEP providers and clinics. The directory also allows for nationwide searches for clinics. The directory map can also be downloaded as a widget, allowing partners to post the tool on their own websites. The map will soon feature an API for others to download directory data to use as needed. The directory is currently used on websites such as Greater than AIDs and AIDSVu.
Emory CFAR is extremely pleased with the results. “PrEP is an exciting tool that uses antiretroviral medications to prevent HIV transmission, and it is remarkably effective. To access this tool, we launched PrEP Locator to help patients identify clinics and provider that prescribe PrEP. SIGNAL has been a key partner, developing database and website components that allow us to translate science into action.” The website launched in November, 2016 and has been featured in Huffington Post and Rolling Stone. SIGNAL and CFAR are continuing to refine and improve the directory’s data and usability.
